Increase Productivity When You Work From Home

For most people, working at home sounds like a great idea in theory. No office to report to, no boss breathing down your neck, spending more time with your family. But in reality, it can be challenging to balance work like and home life when your office is in your house. Work is always there, just around the corner waiting to be done. Likewise, your family life is always there too - a laundry pile, a sink of dishes, children who'd rather play with you than watch a movie while you work.

Everything you do is important, so how do you decide what to do when?

The trick is to maximize the time you spend at your job so you have time to live your life. If you have a home based business or are about to start one, it's something you'll need to get a grip if you want to be successful. It's an ever evolving process as your work from home businesss grows, as your family grows, as life changes, but there are some standards you can start now and try to adhere to no matter what's thrown at you.

  • First, establish hours each day that are devoted only to work. This will help you carve out a routine to fit your job into your life at home. Make sure everyone in your family is onboard and knows when you're working, you aren't to be bothered unless it's an emergency.
  • If you have children, seriously consider childcare during your 'office hours' or work when they nap, are in preschool or are otherwise entertained. There's nothing more frustrating (for you or for them) than trying to get an important email off or take a phone call when your attention is divided.
  • Stay away from the Internet. It's so tempting but if you limit your surfing, there'll be enough hours in the day to get everything done. If you burn your work hours up cruising the Internet or watching TV, you're only eating up time that you could be at the park with your toddler or making cookies with your pre-teen.
  • Have a room, or a corner, of your own. Designate a place that's for you only. Make sure your family knows where that space is and that you're to be left alone when you're there. It sounds harsh, but if you're consistent everyone will get the message and you'll have more time away from work.
  • Plan for play. Allow some time each day to do the things you want to do so you don't feel overwhelmed. Set aside late afternoons for walks or time with your kids.
  • Let the little stuff go. Your closet probably could use an overhaul, but it shouldn't take priority over your livelihood. Get your work done first. Make a weekly list of household duties and try dividing the work among family members.
  • Don't beat yourself up. There will always be something else to do. At the end of the day, celebrate what you were able to accomplish and let the rest go. There's always tomorrow.
