Some Questions to Ask Yourself Before Investing in a Home Business Opportunity

Before investing in a business opportunity or a franchise to launch a home based business, ask yourself these questions:

• Are you a skilled and effective manager? That is, can you effectively manage yourself (and others if you need to hire employees).
• What financing or capital will you need for the business you would like to start?
• Are you prepared for the commitment required to establish your business?
• What work/business experience do you have, and how will that help support your new business efforts? What additional training or skills will you need to acquire?

And here is some general advice:

• Consider starting a home-based business in a field in which you have some experience or familiarity. Simply owning a business you may give you enough new things to learn.
• Plan on taking an active role in your business. Absentee owners generally find it more difficult to build their business to success.
• Request a disclosure document from the parent company, and make sure they are profitable and financially sound. Find out how many start-ups have closed, and learn the primary reasons why. It's great wisdom to be able to learn from the experience of others, and it will help you avoid mistakes.
• Interview other franchisees/licensees and home-business owners. Ask them for as much advice as possible, and try to learn what has helped their businesses be successful.
• From any parent company you are considering, learn about the initial training and long term support they offer. Make sure that it feels adequate to meet your needs.
