Top 10 Home Office Tools
You're ready to start your home-based business, but you're lacking one major thing - stuff!
Before you decide you have to rent out a space or spend your savings on what you may think are home-office essentials, take a moment to think about what you really need.
That may mean trimming down to the bare necessities to get you through the day, so don't get the brand new iMac or laser printer just yet. Here are a few things you really do need to get going.
- Space. This needs to be a priority if your new venture is going to be a success. You don't have to build an addition on your house to make it a reality. Try clearing a corner of clutter to make room for a desk and a filing cabinet. Maybe you have a guest room or space in your basement that's rarely used. Get creative with the rooms you have to carve out a peaceful place to get your work done.
- Computer. You won't get much done without it. If you don't already have one, think about how you'll be working before you make a purchase. Planning to work only in your home office? A desktop computer might be your best bet. Will you be traveling or do you have wireless Internet access and want to be able to work in different spaces in your house (like the kitchen!)? A laptop may be the way to go. Whichever you choose, stick to the basic models to save money. You can always upgrade or add bells and whistles later.
- Software. Chances are your computer has the basics - an email program, a word processing program and a way to connect to the Internet. You may also need specific programs for home business, so make sure you find out what they are and include them in your start-up budget.
- Internet connection. You need a reliable way to connect and stay connected to the Internet throughout the day. Dial-up is less expensive, but you will probably want to add an extra phone line if that's the route you choose. Broadband is available in most areas and while it's a bit more expensive, it's faster and frees your landline.
- Surge protector. It's the best $6 you'll spend. It'll give you additional outlets for your computer and it's peripherals, and it'll also protect your equipment.
- A phone. Don't skimp and think you can just use your home line when work at home, especially if you have a family. A well-intentioned teenager could interrupt your conversation just as you're closing a deal or could occupy the telephone line for hours. Invest in a second line or purchase a cell phone to be used only for your business needs.
- A printer. You'll need it to create hard copies of documents for safe keeping. Choose a middle-of-the-line model unless you really do need clear color copies of documents for your business. Purchase a few extra print cartridges, too, so you don't get caught empty handed in a time of need.
- Filing cabinet. Technology has brought us a long way, but most businesses still churn out a lot of paper. You'll need a place to file documents, copies of important e-mails and bills.
- A chair. This is one thing you don't want to skimp on. There's great value in a comfortable chair. You'll be inclined to work just a little longer if your back isn't killing you.
- Lights. Poor lighting is murder on your eyes. Like a good chair, a nice light will improve your productivity and make help make your overall work experience much more enjoyable.
If you still have a laundry list of office supplies you'd like to purchase, keep a list. Having material goals is a good way to make sure your business continues to thrive.
