Are You Franchisee Material?

When researching a home-based business opportunity, you will find that one option is to purchase a home-based franchise.

In purchasing a home-based franchise, you buy a business process and model for a product or service that has been franchised by its parent company. In establishing the franchise opportunity, the business is designed so that your own home can be the base for management and operation. And most often, you are taught not only how to run the business, but the best guidance the franchise can offer to help you succeed. Many franchises even offer continued help and support while you operate the business. Your success is their success.

Franchisors look for certain qualities in candidates:

  • They look for people who demonstrate commitment and excitement about the product or service. Ask yourself: Are you interested in a particular field? Would you be happy operating the business for the next 20 years?

  • Franchisors also look for competency. Do you have the necessary skills? What special knowledge or experience can you bring to a business?

  • A hard working work ethic is also important. How many hours are you willing to work? Do you want to operate the business yourself or hire a manager?

  • A Franchisee must be willing to follow the exact business plan and procedures of the franchise system. Are you very independent and full of ideas of ways to make change? Do you work well with a team? Within the structure of most franchises, you will need to follow the guidelines already established by the Franchisor. Some people find these guidelines stifling, while others thrive under the clear direction it provides.

  • A Franchisee must have sufficient financial resources to not only pay for start up fees, but also enough to maintain the business and keep yourself afloat for at least a year until the business gets rolling.

  • It is also important as a Franchisee to know your weaknesses and be able to reach out to and/or hire help when needed. Can you see your own faults and also be open to seeing what you need to make things work? For example, if organizing the financial books of a home-business is not your strong point, that is not a problem. You will probably want to be willing, however, to hire an accountant. They can focus on the books while you make the rest of the business a success.
