Making Cold Calls in Your Home Business

Are you afraid your first cold call for your home business will be a disaster? Don't want to jumble your words or get hung-up on?
You aren't alone. Just about everyone finds cold calling nerve racking. Still, it's a major part of doing business so it's a good idea to devise a way to take the stress out of it and make your calls successful.
There are a few tricks you can try to help yourself relax and get your message across without hearing the discouraging sound of a phone line disconnecting.
  1. Take a breath. Unwind a little. Before you pick up the phone, take a few deep inhales and exhales and think about what you're going to say about your franchise. Say your pitch aloud a few times so you know what you sound like and are comfortable with your voice.
  2. Keep your eyes on the prize. You don't have to make the sale with the call. You only have to get an appointment so that you can make your pitch. Make that your goal and you may get a little further.
  3. Study up! Your call should be targeted to the correct audience, so be sure to know a little about the company or person you're calling. Knowledge will improve your confidence.
  4. Practice your intro. It will help you organize your thoughts before picking up the phone. You're also less likely to make mistakes like giving the person you're calling a chance to terminate the conversation. Say your opening sentence a few times to a friend (or yourself in the mirror) for practice.
  5. Prepare a script. You don't want to leave any details of your home-based business so briefly lay out the benefits of your product or service. What objections or questions might the receiver have about your business? Write out your responses so you aren't caught off guard.
  6. Be specific! Remember, your goal is to make an appointment so suggest a day and time that you can meet face-to-face.
  7. Be nice. It goes without saying, but it really is important. A cold call is your chance to make a good first impression. If you're pushy or rude to a receptionist, there's a good chance you'll never talk to her boss. Try to smile when you're speaking. People can hear it in your voice and will become more responsive to what you're saying, just like in person.
  8. Send a promotional item ahead of the call. It doesn't have to be expensive, just something that'll trigger their memory of your product or service. It can help break the ice and help your business stand out from the crowd.
  9. Time your call. Most people just aren't in the mood late in the day. Make your calls early in the morning. There's a better chance you'll reach the decision maker directly and you'll both be more energized.
  10. Don't quit. If you've decided to work from home, you're a go-getter. Put your spirit to work and be persistent. Remember, every no means you're one step closer to a yes. The most important thing is practice, practice, practice. Eventually you'll become more comfortable with your business and making your pitch. Try your spiel out on your spouse, your parents, or your friends - anyone who will listen. Ask for criticism - would they agree to meet you? If not, ask what you can do to convince them.

Practice will help eliminate the jitters and cement the ideas you're trying to relay so that they are like a quiver of points you can shoot into a conversation with impressive accuracy. The people you want to do business with are out there - you just have to let them know about you.
